Can you test this patch out to see if it fixes this problem on your machine? Added a new X configuration option “Interactive”, which defaults to enabled, but can be disabled to allow long-running GPU compute programs to run concurrently with X.

The sky2 driver seems to support this device. As Randy says, sky2 looks like your best bet.
